Dark & Moody

An Emerald Oasis…

There is definitely a new trend in design and it’s got me feeling all dark and moody…but definitely in a good way! I recently travelled to Budapest, and stayed at a super chic AirBnb, right on Andrássy one of the most coveted streets in the city. Now I have to preface this by saying, I am ultra picky about my AirBnB’s. If they are not as nice or better than my home, I’m not staying! So, from the photos, this apartment was right up my alley. On arrival, I walked through the beautifully tiled hallway to my room, unlocked the door, and there it was. Another dark and moody room, giving me a warm cozy feeling. The walls were covered in what resembled Ben Moore’s Gentlemans Grey, windows adorned with gold velvet and crisp white linens on an ever so comfy bed.

It’s interesting, design trends come and go, but seems to me that every time they come it’s even better than the last time. Let’s talk brown, I mean really, the last time I saw brown on a wall and it seemed fitting was in the late 90’s. Today, I’m seeing brown much more, all shades of brown and it looks so good, be it on walls, furniture, kitchen cabinets or soft goods. Somehow, over the past several years we all got into the whites, neutrals, grays and greige’s (it’s not to say that these are not good or on trend any longer because they are and always will be the mainstays of interior design) we saw a huge absence of color, if not for the occasional throw pillow, or accessory. This year Benjamin Moore revealed it’s color of the year; a deep and saturated raspberry. WOW!! What an escape and true inspiration from the previous years of soft whites, pale greens and revered grays!

I also would like to call attention to not just using darker paints on the walls, but try this on your trim, window casings and ceilings. Not only does this lend to that dark and moody feeling in a room, but it’s a more cohesive look. I follow @ErinOprea, a health & fitness queen on Instagram, who took on her own bedroom redesign. She did an incredible job! Let’s just say her room went from “hmm, okay”, to “YES, SLAY!!” See the B&A photos below. Erin’s inspo piece was her headboard, she took this deep emerald to every wall surface, and even her nightstands and dresser. She then brought in the light…white/cream/beige linens, washed wood floors, and gold accent mirrors & lighting. The finished space is HEAVENLY!!

So let me ask you this, would you take on a deeper or darker paint tone in your home? Or maybe even brighter paint/furnishings in your home? I know I would for sure!!
